Most of us enjoy tuning into a podcast during our long runs or commutes, but with an expanding list to choose from it's hard to know where to start.
Here's six of our favourites to point you in the right direction.
1. The Freetrail Podcast with Dylan Bowman
Listen: YouTube, Apple, Spotify
Presented by professional trail runner Dylan Bowman, The Freetrail Podcast is a weekly release featuring interviews with athletes from the elite end of the sport.
In 2022 alone, Dylan has interviewed an incredible roster of guests, including Kilian Jornet, Nienke Brinkman, Francois D'Haene, Camille Herron and Jim Walmsley.
Available in both audio and video, Freetrail is an essential listen that will undoubtedly leave you feeling inspired.
2. Outlandish
Website: outlandish.run
Listen: Apple, Spotify, YouTube
The recently launched Outlandish podcast, hosted by Ed Scott, focuses on southeast England - A pocket of the UK that is not known for its landscapes but has a bubbling trail running community.
I had the pleasure of featuring in season one, alongside many other interesting folk, such as Darryl Hanstien from Ugoku Projects.
3. Trail Society
Listen: YouTube, Apple, Spotify
Trail Society is presented by professional runners Keely Henninger, Corrine Malcolm, and Hillary Allen, who all bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.
Each show provides a fascinating conversation, often centred around a specific topic, such as the recent series on women's health within trail running.
4. British Ultra Running Podcast
Website: britishultrarunningpodcast.com
Listen: Apple, Spotify
The British Ultra Running Podcast has been described by hosts James Elson and Dan Lawson as more closely resembling a recorded phone call than a podcast!
Nevertheless, the conversations are fascinating and provide raw insight into some of the best British athletes in our sport.
Our favourite episode this year features Mary Darbyshire, a hugely talented and humble runner who holds course records at Arc of Attrition and Lakeland 100 races.
5. Trail & Error
Website: trailanderror.co.uk
Listen: Apple, Spotify
Presented by Jay Grady and Tris Stephenson the Trail & Error podcast has a lovely tone and always delivers an enjoyable conversation.
The guests are wide-ranging, often featuring talented athletes and race organisers - I really enjoyed the recent conversation with US runner David Laney.
6. The Way of the Runner
Website: thewayoftherunner.com
Listen: Apple, Spotify,
Well-known author Adharanand Finn hosts the Way of the Runner podcast, and his friendly and inquisitive nature brings these conversations to life.
Whilst there is plenty of light-hearted chat, the discussion often delves below the surface and into the 'why' of running.
Our favourite episode has to be the interview with British ultra running legend Jasmine Paris.
